Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is a secular (non-religious), research-based training programme designed to help participants cultivate the life-changing skill of self-compassion. Please note it is not a therapy group, but a skills-based training group.
Over the course of 8 sessions, you will begin to experience:
Improved relationships with yourself, with your body and with others by managing the inner critic.
Better resilience in the face of life’s difficulties.
The courage to face your own blind spots, creating space for self-development.
An increased sense of connection to others.
More natural engagement in self-care behaviours e.g. exercise and drinking less.
Being less afraid of failure – helping you to live life more fully.
Connection to your core values, helping to guide you in a direction that resonates with you deeply.

The MSC course is a series of workshops aiming to help you directly experience self-compassion and learn practices that evoke self-compassion in daily life.

MSC is based on the research of Kristin Neff (University of Texas) and the clinical expertise of Christopher Germer (University of Harvard). MSC is a training programme designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. The sessions cover the core principles and practices that will help you to let go of the inner critic and enable you to approach difficult moments in your life with compassion, patience and understanding.
What to expect
Each session will include short talks, easy and short meditations (suitable for all levels) exercises, some group discussion (participants are not obligated to speak if they do not wish to) and some manageable home practices.
Audios and handouts will be provided.
MSC combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion to enhance our capacity for emotional wellbeing. Mindfulness is the first step—turning with loving awareness toward difficult experience (thoughts, emotions, and sensations). Self-compassion comes next—bringing loving awareness to ourselves. Together, mindfulness and self-compassion comprise a state of warm, connected, presence during difficult moments in our lives.
In a randomized, controlled study, MSC significantly increased self-compassion, compassion for others, mindfulness, and life satisfaction, as well as decreased depression, anxiety and stress. Improvements were linked to how much a person practiced in their daily lives.
MSC is therapeutic but it’s not therapy. The emphasis of the program is on enhancing emotional resources to meet emotional challenges, old and new. MSC is also not primarily a type of mindfulness training; MSC is mindfulness-based compassion training in which the quality of warmth is emphasized more than awareness itself.

Juice Cleansing: The merits of fasting have been highlighted most recently by the 5:2 diet, however, there is much more to it that weight management and chronic disease prevention. From a naturopathic perspective, vitality is elevated and skin, digestive, mental and liver health all improve. and your desire for consuming healthy food is renewed. Participants will drink juices and nut milks over the course of the weekend, breaking their brief fast with a small, but delicious healthy meal on Sunday afternoon.
Total Body Cleanse Yoga: Total Body Cleanse teaches a selection of specialised techniques on how to cleanse the entire body. This type of Hatha yoga focuses on cleansing all the organ systems, incorporating yogic breathing, cleansing techniques and asana to improve posture and aid relaxation.
Mindfulness Meditation: Learn to live in the present moment. In the modern world, every day stresses and worries mean many of us unable to really be here, right now. Cultivating a basic meditation practice increases your ability to concentrate, improves stress levels, helps you to manage unhelpful, ruminative thought, and will change your relationship with yourself, and therefore also others, for the better.
Healthy food preparation demonstrations: Alex and Sybille will demonstrate some simple but truly delicious healthy recipes to inspire you to continue with healthy eating after the weekend.
Nutrition talks: understand what is happening in the body when juice cleansing and why it’s a great thing to do intermittently. Learn about how the body works and which nutrients it needs to stay in good health.

A wonderful way for the time-poor to learn the core theory and enjoy some practices from the evidence-based Mindful Self-Compassion course. Self-compassion skills help us be kind and caring toward ourselves rather than being critical, judgemental and in some cases pushing ourselves to the detriment of our physical and mental health.
Students of MSC have been shown to have increased emotional resilience and report more happiness, life satisfaction and less depression and anxiety.

Join Alex Newte Hardie, naturopath, general health practitioner and mindfulness facilitator at the Light Centre Belgravia to help you gently wake up to the extent of the extraneous suffering we experience due to over-thinking our lives, and to experience ways of anchoring yourself to the present moment with gentleness and compassion.
Research shows that for at least 50% of our waking hours, most of us are trapped in endless excess thought - worrying, planning for the future, going over to-do lists, reflecting on conversations and scenarios from the past, criticising ourselves...the list goes on and on. This mind ‘chatter' causes our health to suffer as we feel more stressed and exhausted then we need to be, tensions build up in the body creating dysfunction, and work and relationships are affected because we are unable to be truly present with our colleagues, friends and family. This dustbowl of thoughts we live inside means we are also less able to listen to the quiet wisdom in our hearts and minds that knows what is best for us and what we truly need to feel content and well.
This course will help you to:
- Learn to live in the present moment and gain freedom from relentless thoughts or ruminations about the past, and plans or worries about the future.
- Experience peace and contentment no matter what is going on around you (or inside your mind and body).
- Begin to embody curiosity and compassion towards yourself and others.
- Transform your relationship with your life, your family, partner, colleagues, friends and most importantly, yourself.
- Improve weight problems, pain and immune system issues, heart disease, mild addictions and other stress-related health issues.
